Dusk At Orange Lake

Dusk At Orange Lake
For 2025, the Florida Farm Bureau Federation commissioned Brad to paint something featuring Florida agriculture, and left him with the freedom of subject and composition. Knowing that they weren’t seeking a collage style painting in an attempt to represent all the commodities produced in Florida, Brad narrowed his focus to a couple of key points: he wanted to include some change in elevation in the landscape so as to represent the entirety of the state and he settled on the two earliest commodities instrumental to Florida’s settlement - cattle and citrus. Along US Hwy 441 between McIntosh and Citra, is a conservation area called the Orange Lake Overlook where cattle graze alongside the dilapidated remains of an old roadside citrus stand that proved to be the ideal to place for representing many aspects of Florida agriculture in one image. Rather than painting the old citrus stand, Brad employed some creative licensing and included a citrus tree in the background reminiscent of those planted by seminoles and settlers years ago which can still be found growing wild throughout the state.
