Chickees were the traditional housing structure for Seminoles for many years and they continue to be used today as an integral component of the landscape whether at heritage festivals or alongside modern homes where they might serve as an outdoor gathering place or cooking area. In this image, several men have gathered to build new chickees at a campsite in the edge of a Florida hammock. Palm fronds cut from Sabal palm trees (known to locals as “cabbage trees”) and stacked on the ground before being passed to the roof as strategically placed thatching material.
