Weaving sweetgrass baskets takes considerable skill and knowledge passed generationally from mother to daughter, but before the baskets can be woven, raw materials must be gathered from the Florida landscape. The sweetgrass typically is gathered from high, dry locations where it is pulled a few strands at a time before it is washed, dried, and tied into small bundles.
